Mr. Grant is a magna cum laude graduate from St. Mary’s University School of Law. His distinguished law school record, including serving as a law review editor on the highly respected St. Mary’s Law Journal, provided the foundation for his professional success.
He began his legal career at Gardere & Wynne, L.L.P. (now Gardere Wynne Sewell L.L.P., a Dallas-based international law firm) where Mr. Grant worked on complex cases involving oil and gas matters, bankruptcy, and commercial litigation issues.
Charlie Grant grew a bit dissatisfied representing large corporations and wanted to tackle the new challenges of criminal law. Beginning in 1994, Mr. Grant spent three and one-half years as a misdemeanor and felony prosecutor in Travis County, Texas trying to juries a wide variety of criminal cases and understanding the intricacies of criminal law. His work as a prosecutor gave gave him insight and experience that benefits his clients today.
In 1997, Mr. Grant left the Travis County District Attorney’s office to work with Stuart Kinard, the Dean of Texas DWI lawyers and one of the most respected criminal defense lawyers in America. Under Stuart Kinard’s tutelage, Mr. Grant further tempered his skills to become a successful criminal defense lawyer. Many lawyers utilize the DWI cross-examination techniques designed and pioneered by Mr. Grant and Mr. Kinard.
Mr. Grant has tried cases against some of the best lawyers in Texas and has teamed with many of the finest lawyers in Central Texas. His abilities and experience make him a trusted source of counsel and advice for other lawyers. Mr. Grant has spoken in numerous legal education seminars to train fellow lawyers. In 2008, his fellow criminal defense lawyers elected him to preside over the Austin Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, and he was also appointed to sit on the DWI Committee for the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. Charlie Grant was born and raised in West Texas and has deep Austin roots.
Although Mr. Grant devotes over 90% of his practice to criminal defense and related work, he also represents people who need his help in various family law, personal injury, and oil and gas matters. Mr. Grant is an active participant in the Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas and has served as a mentor for the Austin Independent School District.
